Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Isla Mujeres firemen were quick to the scene of a restaurant fire Saturday. The fire happened inside the Mayan Monkey Beach Club, which was formerly Nómadas.
Timely intervention by the Isla Mujeres firefighters and municipal public safety elements prevented a more disastrous incident. Emergency services were called after the restaurant’s chimney began to spark, which caught the palapa roof on fire.
Inside the establishment is a traditional pizza oven with a chimney. While firing up the oven Saturday, the chimney started to throw off sparks, some of which made it to the grass roof above.
Isla Mujeres firemen were able to control the fire without it spreading. While a large section of their roof was consumed, flames were contained and damage considered minimal.

Civil Protection and Municipal Police continue to work with island firemen in determining the exact cause. There were no injuries reported in the incident.
