Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Restaurant patrons from a seafood establishment on the island of Isla Mujeres were evacuated after the report of a fire. On Thursday afternoon, the popular eatery, which is located directly on the beach, had to evacuate staff and customers after smoke was seen coming from the kitchen.
Island firemen and police were sent to Mar-Bella Fish Market restaurant along the Garrafón highway where they arrived to find things already under control. Staff from the restaurant were able to snuff out small flames causing the unsettling smoke.
While police made a report of the 4:30 p.m. incident, firemen double checked the initial fire source, which is said to be from inside a chimney in the kitchen.
Isla Mujeres Civil Protection Director, Guillermo Morales López, confirmed the smoky fire and said that it was under control by the time authorities arrived. Restaurant staff immediately cut the power and turned off the stoves to prevent things from escalating.
There were no injuries reported. Damage to the kitchen was minor.
