Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A stranded Hawksbill turtle has been rescued by Isla Mujeres veterinarians after it was reported to authorities. Officials made the rescue after receiving the report of a stranded sea turtle on the dock of the Hotel Mia.
Tortugranja staff proceeded to transfer the female turtle to their facilities where she was assessed to rule out external injuries. She was later transferred to the Isla Mujeres AC veterinary.
Deline García Canto, director of Tortugranja explained that after X-rays at the veterinary clinic, with the support of the Tortuguero del Caribe AC group, the sea turtle was taken to the Xcaret group, who has a specialized sea turtle team to provide the attention needed since the turtle was found to be in a state of malnutrition.
García Canto noted that this species, the Hawksbill, is considered critically endangered worldwide.
