Cozumel, Q.R. — Ten Cuban nationals who were seen making landfall on the island of Cozumel have been detained. The group was located Friday morning as they made landfall at Isla de la Pasión on northern Cozumel.
During processing, authorities learned the group had set sail 10 days earlier from the Cuban city of Matanzas. They were headed for Mexico. As they were spotted heading toward Mexican territory, the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Cozumel requested the support of police.
The eight men and two women were detained by authorities as they made landfall. They were transferred to INM in Cozumel for processing. Their boat was seized by island authorities.
