Hit and run taxi driver arrested after angry residents locate his vehicle

Chetumal, Q.R. — A taxi driver who was caught in a hit and run on surveillance has been arrested in Chetumal. On Wednesday, a 3-year-old child was stuck by the fast moving taxi as it sped down a main roadway.

The child, a small boy, was hit by the front of the taxi and thrown underneath. His body was expelled several meters later. The driver of the unit did not stop, however, a camera mounted on the outside of a store captured the incident.

Several people rushed to the aid of the mother and boy, who was scooped up from the middle of the road and rushed to hospital by a good samaritan. As the video was disseminated across social media, motorcyclists took to locating the hit-and-run taxi driver.

The unit, part of the Sindicato Único de Choferes de Automóviles de Alquiler in Chetumal, was found behind gates of a private property on Calle Veneci. Police were sent to the home Wednesday afternoon in response to the 911 call in locating the vehicle. The driver of the unit was arrested.

The accident happened Wednesday just after 4:00 p.m. when a woman and her children were attempting to cross Maxuxac Avenue. The woman had two other children in her company, one in each hand, when the 3-year-old boy ran ahead a few feet and into the path of the oncoming taxi.

The boy was picked up by his mother from the road and rushed to hospital by a private vehicle that stopped to help. The boy died shortly after arriving.
