Government reports Playa del Carmen and Akumal with highest hotel occupancy rates in country

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen and Akumal have been reported as the two busiest tourist centers in the country. The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico says hotel occupancy rates in those two areas topped the most-occupied list in the first half of 2024.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, reported Playa del Carmen with an average hotel occupany rate of 89 percent followed by Akumal with 82 percent.

Torruco Marqués detailed that during the first half of 2024, hotels in Playacar in particular were the most busy or most occupied (89.8 percent) followed by hotels located in other areas of Playa del Carmen (75.1 percent). The second most busy or hotel occupied area recorded has been Akumal, in the municipality of Tulum with 82.8 percent.

According to the report by Miguel Torruco Marqués, more than 41 million tourists stayed in hotel rooms across Mexico in the first half of 2024. Of those, 29.4 million (75.1 percent) were national tourists while 11.7 million were foreigners, representing 28.5 percent of the total in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur, who provided the figures.

He noted that during this period, hotel occupancy reached 60 percent in the 70 destinations monitored by DataTur, with 52.4 percent occupancy rate in city destinations and 68.5 percent on beaches.

Other busy or high hotel occupied areas during the first half of 2024 include Nuevo Nayarit with 80.8 percent, Cabo San Lucas with 80 percent and Cancun with 77.7 percent.
