Zofemat in talks with Playa del Carmen hotels to open new public beach access

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal authorities are working on opening another public beach access in north Playa del Carmen. PDC’s Zofemat head Irving Lili Madrigal says work is being done to open Playa Montecarlo at Xcalacoco.

The Blue Flag beach at Xcalacoco does not offer public access from a roadway.

According to Madrigal, they are in negotiations with the H10 Hotel to open the access road to Montecarlo Beach, a beach with a Blue Flag accreditation. As part of the project, they are also looking to improve infrastructure and provide services for beachgoers.

According to Madrigal, the Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), the intention is to develop a comprehensive plan for this area in 2026. That plan will include the construction of bathrooms and the improvement of mobility in the Xcalacoco area where beach access is currently narrow due to erosion. He also noted that the area is without parking spaces.

“First, we’re going to open the access and then continue with these improvements,” he said adding that they in talks with neighboring hotels to gain support for the project.

Madrigal added that in coordination with the Planning Department, a comprehensive urban planning plan is being drawn up for the area, stating that Mayor Estefanía Mercado has shown particular interest in improving the conditions of the municipality’s public beaches.

Access from the beach is difficult due to extreme beach erosion.

He says City Hall has already made observations regarding the current condition of all Playa del Carmen’s public beaches and the priority needs for their improvement.
