German killed and Brit injured in Lázaro Cárdenas ranch shooting

Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — A German man is dead and his British girlfriend in hospital after they were shot at a private home Friday. The shooting happened early Friday morning in a jungle area in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

According to preliminary information, the couple were shot on a ranch they were watching for a friend in, what is speculated to have been, an attempted robbery. At least two gunmen entered La Esperanza Ranch where they happened upon the couple.

Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, however, it is known that the man, Martin “S” of Germany was shot and killed and that his 32-year-old British girlfriend, Sofie “W”, was injured.

She was airlifted to a Playa del Carmen hospital where she remains in critical condition.

The Attorney General of Quintana Roo has issued a brief statement saying, “The FGE of Quintana Roo informs that it initiated an investigation to clarify an event that occurred early Friday in which two people of foreign nationality were attacked with a firearm in a jungle area of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.”

Sofie’s father, Carl, has told Riviera Maya News that the couple had been looking after the ranch for a friend for only two weeks when the incident happened. The ranch is owned by a German woman. The ranch where the shooting happened is located in the southern portion of the municipality, which borders to the west of Isla Mujeres, Benito Juarez (Cancun), Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen).
