Forestry continues to battle 460 hectare Isla Mujeres fire

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Forest firemen from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor) continue to battle a 460 hectare fire. The forest fire named El Porvenir has consumed a large area of Isla Mujeres mainland since it began.

According to the Comisión Nacional Forestal (Conafor), the fire is 50 percent controlled.

“The State Incident Management Team (EEMI) has been activated to address the forest fire known as El Porvenir located in the municipality of Isla Mujeres in the state of Quintana Roo.

“The report shows 50 percent control and 30 percent clearance, with a preliminary area of 460 hectares,” Confaor said Tuesday.

“The operations are being coordinated under the Incident Command System (ICS), with the inter-institutional participation of Conafor, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), State Civil Protection, the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) and National Guard.

“Control and liquidation efforts are being carried out, including opening firewalls, direct and indirect attacks and satellite monitoring. The public is urged not to take any risks if they are not trained as forest firefighters and to coordinate with the brigades in case civilian support is needed.
