Kantunilkín, Q.R. — A store selling souvenirs and locally made crafts was heavily damaged by a fire Tuesday afternoon. Firemen were able to extinguish the flames before the entire businesses was consumed, however, the outside of the store suffered extensive damage.
The fire happened at a small business on the outskirts of the town of Kantunilkín. National Guard Highways were sent to deal with traffic while firemen put out the burning building.
Available reports say the fire was started by faulty wiring that caused a small exterior palapa to burn. Due to the lack of rain, the extremely dry palapa grass quickly caught fire.
The palapa was located on the front entrance to the store. Municipal firemen from Lázaro Cárdenas put out the flames. Traffic heading toward the island of Holbox was effected while firemen worked.
There were no injuries reported, only material damage.
