Federal authorities seize Progreso boat with three tons of shark fishing illegally off Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — Approximately three tons of shark was seized from an illegal fishing vessel Monday. The vessel was located off the island of Cozumel and inspected.

According to the Ministry of the Navy, personnel from the Ninth Naval Region in coordination with the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, located the vessel Monday.

In their Tuesday statement, the Agency reported locating the boat during aerial and maritime surveillance tours in the vicinity of Cozumel Island. While inspecting the boat, federal authorities found the shark meat below deck.

The boat and crew were without permits to fish. “Naval and CONAPESCA personnel detained the Pescormex 11 vessel registered in Progreso, as well as the fishing gear and product found on board,” they reported.
