Dogs in seats: Isla Mujeres authorities shut down Ferris wheel

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres has shut down a Ferris wheel after public complaints. Personnel from the Directorate of Urban Development, Environment and Transportation of Isla Mujeres closed the ride after social media videos of two large dogs in seats at the top of the wheel.

The Ferris wheel, which was recently set up along the perimeter of Mar Caribe Avenue, was videoed with two dogs in two different seats that were intentionally placed.

After reviewing video, municipal personnel proceeded to shut down the Ferris wheel. The city of Isla Mujeres is investigating the circumstances that allowed the dogs to be placed on the wheel. They are also investigating security and regulation measures to prevent accidents.

In an official statement from City Hall, the H. Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres said “the Municipal Government, through the Department of Urban Development, Environment and Transportation of Isla Mujeres, has taken immediate measures in response to complaints that have emerged on social media regarding the presence of animals on the Ferris wheel.

“After demonstrating the risk that it represented for the dogs who were evidently deliberately put on the Ferris wheel, the Department has proceeded to the immediate closure of said mechanical game.

“Despite being in the process of installation, it was considered that the safety of the animals and the population in general should be a priority.

“The agency is investigating the circumstances that allowed the animals to access the Ferris wheel, as well as evaluating the security measures and regulations necessary to prevent accidents.

“The community is reminded of the importance of maintaining a safe environment for animals and of reporting any risky situation or animal abuse to the relevant authorities.”
