Digital version of licenses issued to Quintana Roo drivers valid outside country

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Digital driver licenses issued by the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) are also valid in both Canada and the U.S. On January 1, 2024, the state Institute took over the issuance of driver’s licenses from the municipalities.

They became the official agency to issue physical licenses for drivers in the state of Quintana Roo. In August, Imoveqroo (Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo) announced a digital version of those issued licenses were available and accessible with the use of a cell phone.

Drivers who may not have their physical license on their person when needed can access a digital copy of it online. On Tuesday, Imoveqroo Director Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia said the digital version of Quintana Roo-issued driver licenses are also valid in Canada and the U.S.

“The Quintana Roo driver’s license, both physical and digital, is already registered in a guide that the United States and Canada have ,” he said, “so it is valid in those countries, but in addition, it is secure.

“Every time a person downloads it, it is updated on the agency’s servers. If the information on the physical license changes, the digital one also changes.” he said add that “the encryption is military-grade.”

Alcázar Urrutia said if needed, during an arrest for example, both formats can be verified for authenticity through the Institute itself through the QR code.

Only Quintana Roo drivers who have been issued a physical license through Imoveqroo since January 1 can access the digital version online.
