Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel continues to move forward with free public Internet access. So far, 36 of the 41 free internet access points have been installed on the island. The connectivity project belongs to the “Internet for All” program managed by island mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is also part of the project, supplying the modems needed to provide the free Wi-Fi connection.
Eduardo Sánchez Aguilar, the Technical Secretary of the City Council, explained that the program fulfills the mandate of the mayor to generate internet access for citizens and continue promoting the education of the student community, which has been a constant for this government since its inception.
The Director of Systems, Mario Luis del Valle López, said there will be a total of 41 free internet access points in public places such as parks, sports facilities and one in the municipal library.
To date, staff of the Public Services Directorate have already managed to install a total of 36. The others, he said, will be ready in the coming days.
He said that the modems are sponsored by the CFE and are being installed in strategic locations where they can provide full coverage in public space.
With this program, young people on the island who do not have access to the Internet at home will be able to go to these public spaces to connect and be able to complete their homework or conduct research.
The community will also be able to communicate, access their social networks, stay informed, among other things that this free service will provide.
