Cozumel police officers demand removal of current director

Cozumel, Q.R. — More than a dozen Cozumel Municipal Police officers gathered outside the island’s police building Sunday in protest of work conditions. The disgruntled officers voiced their complaints and demanded the dismissal of the island’s current director, Rodrigo Rodríguez Peña.

The group of island officers stopped working Sunday afternoon to voice their concerns which included allegations of ill-treatment. The upset officers say they are frequently insulted and humiliated by Rodrigo Rodríguez Peña, the Cozumel Director of Public Security, who has held the position since September 30 of last year.

Officers also said that not only are they sent out one element per unit and forced to work extra hours without extra pay, they are sent to patrol without radios and are forced to communicate using their own cell phones.
