Cozumel maritime connectivity records significant increase

Cozumel, Q.R. — Maritime connectivity between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen continues as one of the busiest routes in the Mexican Caribbean. A notable increase in passenger and cargo traffic during 2024 has been recorded by port authorities.

According to the most recent data, from January 1 to October 16 of this year, over 1.4 million passengers boarded ferries that operate this route. The figure came from Vagner Elbiorn Vega, the General Director of the Quintana Roo Comprehensive Port Administration (APIQROO).

He says an exact figure of 1,402,802 passengers was recorded as of October 16. Cargo services have also recorded an increase of more than 4 percent. As of October 16, cargo and vehicle transportation on the Calica-Cozumel-Calica route registered a significant increase of 247,540 general transit passengers, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to the same period in 2023.

“The growth we have recorded in passenger and cargo mobility is a reflection of our commitment to guarantee a safe and efficient service. Demand continues to increase, and we are working on constant improvements to ensure that routes continue to operate at maximum capacity,” he said.

This movement not only reflects the tourist appeal of the region, but also the economic dynamism that benefits both locals and visitors. The federal ferry route between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen is essential for the daily transportation of residents, tourists and workers who depend on this maritime link for their daily activities, he said.

This route is also essential for the supply of products and goods to the island, as well as facilitating the transport of heavy-duty vehicles, which is crucial for the infrastructure and commercial operations of the region.
