Cozumel, Q.R. — A man who was released from arrest due to a technicality has been rearrested. On Monday, Joel N was rearrested by Cozumel officers after allegations of domestic violence.
On Friday, Joel N was arrested and charged with public disturbance for which he was quickly released. However, an investigation was ordered into the stabbing of his ex-wife, who remains hospitalized.
On May 20, Joel N was arrested after island police received a call of family violence. His former wife, Vanesa N, was rushed to hospital with six stab wounds allegedly inflicted by her former husband during a heated argument.
The arresting officers only charged him with disturbing the public, which saw him released the following day. However, an investigation into the Friday incident saw him rearrested on Monday by FGE agents.
On Tuesday morning, 24-year-old Joel N saw a judge who ordered him to remain in preventative detention since evidence presented showed a history of aggressive behavior.
While authorities did not say what the official charges were, the presiding judge ordered him detained in the Center for Social Reintegration (CERESO) of Cozumel. He was escorted by officers where he will remain for the duration of his trial.
