Cozumel approves budget increase to deal with excessive sargassum

Cozumel, Q.R. — The municipality of Cozumel will allocate additional money to the collection of sargassum. Marco Antonio Loeza Pacheco, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Cozumel said in coming weeks, more people will be hired to manually collect the seaweed.

He reported another 50 people will be hired to tend to the continual arrival of seaweed, especially along the eastern coast of the island. The head of Zofemat said the decision to hire more people was made after a recent budget increase of four million peso was approved.

A budget increase was needed, he said, to deal with the excessive arrival of seaweed. Loeza Pacheco said that to date, 1,500 tons has already arrived, exceeding the 1,100 tons that was expected.
