Chetumal airport to get 150 million expansion

Chetumal, Q.R. — The expansion of the Chetumal airport will be a reality with the commitment of 150 million peso from the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to carry out the work says Javier Jiménez Espriú, Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes.

Federal deputy, Jesus Pool Moo made the budget revision request of the 2020 expenditures to consider the expansion of the Chetumal airport. “We are the destination that can grow the most towards the south,” he said.

Jiménez Espriú replied to the request saying “We are going to invest 150 million peso in Chetumal this year to grow, because we know about this,” referring to the need to expand the capital’s airport.

An expansion of the Chetumal airport would improve their service areas and the level of service for passengers, reducing check-in waiting time, making baggage claim more efficient and would serve 50,000 additional annual passengers.

From 2014 to 2018, the average annual passenger growth for the Chetumal airport was 19.9 percent, with operation growth at an annual rate of 6.8 percent.

Aside from improving service, an expanded airport would also increase air connectivity with facilities that meet the current and future needs of airlines. Authorities say it could also attract new markets and routes in addition to strengthening the competitiveness and economic development of the region.
