Captain of sunken boat that claimed four lives charged

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The captain of an overcapacity boat that sunk and left four dead has been officially charged. On Friday, Ramón Guadalupe “N”, the captain of La Diosa del Mar (Goddess of the Sea) was charged with manslaughter in a Cancun court.

The State Attorney General says Ramón Guadalupe “N” has been “indicated for his probable participation in events that could be constituting the crime of manslaughter to the detriment of four victims whose identity is withheld.”

On January 29, the tourist boat was returning to the Puerto Juárez mainland from a trip to Isla Mujeres around 6:20 p.m. Along the way, the boat carrying 17 tourists and two crew took on water and sank.

Four people, two women, one man and a 10 year old boy all of Mexican nationality, drowned. A 23 year old woman from the boat was hospitalize and remains in serious condition. Authorities have not provided any information regarding his trial.
