Cancun taxi driver killed after being hit by two stray bullets

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun taxi driver has died after being hit by two stray bullets. The incident happened Friday evening in Region 103 of the city. The taxi driver was traveling down Avenida Talleres around 8:45 p.m. when he was hit twice by bullets of fleeing criminals.

Police were in pursuit of an armed group traveling in a Neon car when the incident occurred. The group, who police were pursing for the robbery of a business in Region 200, began firing random shots from the vehicle as they fled.

Two of those shots happened to hit the taxi driver as he drove past them. He was shot twice, once in his upper right arm and the second in his right shoulder area. Witnesses told police that after being hit, he lost control of his taxi and crashed into two parked vehicles.

Paramedics were called, but he was pronounced on scene. One other innocent bystander was also injured. A Cancun hospital reported the arrival of a gunshot victim in a private vehicle from the same area. There was no word on their health status.

The driver of the Neon car was seen speeding along Andrés Quintana Roo where agents lost track of them. Police conducted a search, but arrests were not announced.
