Cozumel, Q.R. — Environmental authorities of Cozumel were alerted to the discovery of a dead dwarf orca. On Monday, the carcass was found by a citizen on a beach area in the eastern part of the island.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, the Director of the Center for Environmental Conservation of the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel, confirmed the discovery. He reported that the small whale specimen was located around 600 meters north of Mezcalito on the eastern side of Cozumel island.
He said the body has since been removed for an autopsy to determine the cause of its death, which once determined, will be reported to Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
