Authorities investigating dead manatee in Chetumal Bay

Chetumal, Q. R. — Civil Protection personnel of Chetumal recovered the body of a deceased manatee. The body was seen floating in Chetumal Bay Monday by people running past the area.

The passersby noticed an unusual object floating in the sea during an 8:00 a.m. morning run. Responding authorities confirmed it was the body of a manatee, likely dead for around five days.

Civil Protection along with specialists from the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas of Quintana (Ibanqroo) arrived at the Bahia Boulevard location to remove the body.

The manatee was measured to be approximately 2.5 meters in length. According to the first analyses, the animal had been dead for around five days. Manatees are a protected and emblematic species in the region. Authorities are carrying out investigations to determine the possible cause of the death.
