Authorities arrest pair caught smuggling goods on Costa Maya highway

Costa Maya, Q.R. — Costa Maya highway patrol has arrested two men for smuggling. The pair were taken into custody Monday after police found them transporting illegal items.

While traveling behind a semi, a box fell out of the back. Police realized the spilled box was illegal cigarettes. Police caught up with the semi on Avenida Mexico, a section of highway outside the city of Chetumal.

During the stop, three men got out of the vehicle. One ran into the trees in a successful escape. The other two were arrested. The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that authorities confirmed a shipment of illegal cigarettes. Hundreds of boxes were confiscated from the back of the unit. Kevin Kennet “N” and Rigoberto “N” were taken into custody for smuggling.

In a statement, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SCC) said “during surveillance tours, elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security noticed a Torton type vehicle that was traveling at high speed. From the back door, a brown box fell, which broke and from which several black packages with the legend “Gentori Dorado” came out.

“They were caught up with on Avenida Mexico in the direction of the Chetumal-Bacalar federal highway where upon seeing the officers, three men got out of the vehicle and one of them went into the bush.

“The corresponding inspection was carried out in which they confiscated 602 boxes of cigarettes. Of the boxes, 572 are of the Marshal brand and 30 of the Gentori brand. They also detained the vehicle, a white Torton truck with cargo license plates. The vehicle was handed over to the Attorney General’s Office.”

The SSC have said both “Kevin Kennet “N” and Rigoberto “N” were arrested, allegedly involved in the crime comparable to smuggling and/or benefiting from it.”
