Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun taxi driver who fled the scene has been arrested for a vehicle accident that killed a young driver. Police located the man early Sunday morning after he failed to stop and then abandoned his cab.

The driver of the taxi that allegedly killed the young motorcycle driver was found at his home. His taxi had been abandoned elsewhere but was identified by area residents and reported to police who recovered the vehicle.
The fatal accident happened in front of witnesses Saturday night on Lombardo Toledano Avenue. It was around 10:00 p.m. when 19 year old Joseph “T” was hit by the taxi and thrown from his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses say the motorcycle and taxi were traveling in the same direction when the cab hit the bike. The driver of the taxi did not stop. He was located and arrested shortly after the deadly hit and run. In custody is Alexander “M”, who once held the position of police officer in the city of Cancun.

Cancun Police have made a statement clarifying that Alexander “M” was discharged from his position in May of 2023 and is no longer associated with the Cancun police department.

Cancun Police also said that they have informed the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and are maintaining full coordination with that agency to ensure the case is properly investigated and the perpetrator faces the appropriate legal consequences.

“We reiterate our commitment to protecting and serving our citizens,” they stated.
