14 dumped into sea after speeding boat overturns Cozumel tourist vessel

Cozumel, Q.R. — More than a dozen tourists were dumped into the sea Wednesday evening after their boat sunk. The incident was reported around 7:00 p.m. when other boats saw La Perla begin to sink.

Nearby boats came to its aid after the 14 on board were forced to swim when their vessel took on water due to a large wave. La Perla and her 14 passengers were visiting the Palancar reef area south of the island when the incident occurred.

Elements from the Secretary of the Navy arrived to assist the other crew members. Reports say La Perla was projected onto its side after a speeding boat passed, creating a large wave.

No injuries were reported in the mishap. La Perla was towed back to the island.
