12-year-old rushed to hospital after boat passes over him in Isla Mujeres waters

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A 12-year-old boy was rushed to Cancun hospital Tuesday after being hit by a propeller. The young boy was in the water swimming off the eastern coast when a boat’s skipper passed over him.

The child, identifed only as R.C.L., lost fingers and toes after being hit by the boat’s propeller. According to early information, the skipper and occupants of the boat failed to see the boy in the water.

Personnel from the the Seventh Naval Zone confirmed he was taken to hospital after losing fingers on one hand and toes on one of his feet. He was rushed to Isla Mujeres hospital from where he was transported by sea to the mainland by Marina medical personnel. A waiting ambulance at Puerto Juarez transferred him to a Cancun hospital due to a severe loss of blood.

Authorities have not said if the child was swimming alone or in the company of others at the time of the incident. The area where the accident happened is known to be dangerous due to the amount of passing vessels.

As of Thursday, Isla Mujeres authorities had still not made a public comment or provided any details surrounding the accident or the boat involved.
