Tulum International celebrates its first year with nearly 1.1 million passengers

Tulum, Q.R. — The Tulum International Airport has celebrated its first anniversary with nearly 1.1 million air travelers. On December 1, the “Jungle Airport” turned one, celebrating its first anniversary with a record number of travelers.

Authorities had forecast 700,000 passengers for the airport’s first year.

According to Governor Mara Lezama, the airport has exceeded expectations with over 1,074,000 passengers and 8,500 air operations as of November 21, 2024.

On the first anniversary of the Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, Lezama highlighted that it has exceeded all expectations and has become the second busiest airport in the state.

“The International Air Transport Association projected that we would receive 700,000 passengers in the first year. However, thanks to the joint work, the vision and the commitment to our state, we have far exceeded that goal, reaching more than 1,074,000 passengers and 8,500 air operations by November 21. And we still have one month left to close the year!” said Mara Lezama.

The Governor stated that today, the Tulum International Airport is not only a gateway to explore the wonders of the Mexican Caribbean, but it is the second airport with the greatest passenger movement in the state.

The Tulum International Airport celebrates its first anniversary.

She says the airport has an average monthly passenger growth of 13.1 percent, connecting the south of the state with the world and operating with 11 airlines and 15 destinations, both national and international.

On November 3, the Tulum International Airport welcomed its one-millionth passenger. Air passenger Gerardo Treviño Zúñiga, who arrived at the Tulum airport from Laredo, Tamaulipas, was number one million to walk through airport gates, surpassing anticipate figures.

Gerardo Treviño Zúñiga, center, was the airport’s one-millionth passenger.

Locally, Aeromexico, Viva Aerobus and Mexicana de Aviación connect the airport nationally, while international airlines include JetBlue, American Airlines, Air Canada, Delta, United Airlines, Copa Airlines, Sunwing and WestJet.

Lezama says “the best is yet to come. In December, four new airlines will join, consolidating our commitment to making the Mexican Caribbean a hub for global connectivity.

Air Transat will add routes to Montreal and Quebec, Discover Airlines will connect with Frankfurt, and Avianca will connect with Bogotá. Volaris is also planning a new flight to Guadalajara, she said.

“But this achievement is not only for the airport, it belongs to all the people of Quintana Roo. This progress means more jobs, more economic development and more opportunities for the families of our region.

“Thank you to each person who has made this first year of success possible. From the heart of the Mexican Caribbean, we continue working to connect dreams, promote development and write this story of transformation together” said Lezama.
