Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three men found carrying live parrots stuffed in bags have been detained by authorities in Playa del Carmen.
Three men were arrested Monday afternoon for possession and commercialization of 28 parrot hatchlings. According to the Dirección de Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático of Solidaridad, the inspection came after a citizen complaint.
After receiving the complaint, it was passed over to the Federal Office of Environmental Protection and Public Security where federal officials paid a visit to the three men seen selling the parrots on Avenue del Paraíso.
When they arrived, officers found a total of 28 newly hatched parrots stuffed in several bags being offered for sale. The parrots were very young, many without feathers. All the birds were taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.
There is no word yet as to where the birds came from or if there are more people in the city selling them. Citizens have been asked to call Emergency 911 if they see the illegal activity of parrots being sold.
