Town protestors claim reef and road damage at Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Several dozen locals gathered over the weekend in protest of the unloading of stone material from a Cuban vessel. Protestors say that the anchors belonging to ship Melody has damaged the reef.

Local protestors were also unhappy with the unloading of the stone that is being transported by land saying the trucks will eventually collapse the only entrance into the Old Town.

The ‘ecocide’ demonstration was peaceful and included slogans against the Maya Train while others were in favor of protecting the reef and local mangrove.

Earlier this month, authorities began unloading the stone material from Cuban vessel Melody which is being transported by land for sections 5, 6 and 7 of Maya Train use. Due to ongoing strong winds, the unloading has been temporarily suspended.
