Texas tourist helps save sea turtle stuck in Cozumel rock

Cozumel, Q.R. — Staff from the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel were part of a sea turtle rescue team Saturday. The adult sea turtle was found stuck in sharp limestone by an American Punta Sur EcoPark visitor over the weekend.

On Saturday, San Antonio, Texas, visitor Griffin “W” alerted park guide Carlos “A” when he noticed the sea turtle. Park Director, Jesús Benavides Andrade and Biologist Héctor González Cortés had to break the rock surrounding the turtle to free her.

They spent more than an hour chiseling away the sharp limestone that was holding her in place. A small crowd gathered as the rock was removed and the sea turtle eventually freed.

The Cozumel sea turtle is one of several freed after becoming stuck in limestone while trying to return to the sea. Already this season, at least three adult sea turtles required help after becoming lodged in limestone on Isla Mujeres.
