Akumal, Q.R. — The driver of a vehicle that killed a pedestrian Monday has been taken in for questioning. Police were called to the federal highway outside the town of Akumal after a man was stuck and killed.

The accident happened Monday morning in front of a hotel. It is not known if the man, reported to be around 35, was an employee of the nearby hotel. According to early information, the man was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by an SUV traveling at highway speed.
The front passenger side of the SUV was crushed inward from the hard impact. The man was found laying in a highway lane near the central median. A backpack of his belongings was located several meters away from where his body was found.
Tulum Civil Protection personnel responded to the Monday morning accident along with paramedics who pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The SUV that struck the man was a rental vehicle.

Municipal Police and National Guard secured the scene while forensics removed the body from the highway.

On Saturday night, a man crossing the highway in Akumal under a pedestrian overpass was struck by a vehicle. He suffered severe head and leg injuries and was transferred to a Playa del Carmen hospital.
