Municipalities send 36 firemen to deal with stubborn Holbox garbage fire

Holbox, Q.R. — A garbage dump fire in Holbox proved difficult to extinguish. After being put out Tuesday evening, the fire began again over night. Firemen from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Lázaro Cárdenas were sent to the island to deal with the burning garbage heap.

According to a briefing by Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil QRoo, 36 Cancun firemen arrived on the island of Holbox to deal with the stubborn fire. The fire was reported at the solid waste transfer site Tuesday around 3:00 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, the National Guard, Mexican Army and the Navy arrived along with firefighters from the three municipalities to extinguish the fire that started up again during the night hours.

Jesús Alejandro Erosa Betancourt, Director of the Lázaro Cárdenas Fire Department, said he was confident that it would be fully controlled during their second attempt.

The cause of this fire is still unknown.
