Chetumal, Q.R. — A man has died after being attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees in Chetumal.
The attack happened on Avenida 4 de Marzo while the elderly man was using his tricycle. According to the police report, it was around 5:00 p.m. when they received a distress call from Emergency 911 reporting a man lying on the roadway.
The man had been attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees, stung approximately 500 times. Police and paramedics arrived, however, the man had already died.
Members of the fire department exterminated the swarm of bees.
The man was apparently cutting firewood and was attempting to remove the cut wood when he was attacked.
The Africanized bee, also referred to as killer bees, are known to be much more defensive than other types of honey bees.
