JMM mayor reaches ejido ownership agreement over Expomar land

José María Morelos, Q.R. — Mayor Erik Borges Yam reached an agreement Sunday with ejidatarios regarding Expomar land. The two sides have been in disagreement about who owns the land where the military began to build a new barracks late last year.

On Sunday, Borges Yam said that during a meeting with the group of José María Morelos ejidos, it was verified that the land being built on does belong to the government and not the ejidos.

Borge Yam said he went to the ejido building to meet with the committee in the presence of some members of the ejido to prove, in accordance with the law, that the Expomor lands truly belongs to the people.

In a statement, Borges Yam said “the ejidal commissioner of Kilómetro 50, Juan Bautista Moen Uluac, officially recognized that the Expomor premises, located at the exit to Chetumal, legally belongs to the city council and supported the resolution of this conflict.”

Ejidatario Pedro Dzib Puc took the floor and thanked Mayor Erik Borges for the open and transparent discussion. “I thank the mayor with all my heart. I am a social fighter and I recognize that this is a matter resolved thanks to the good will of the mayor,” he said.

Borges Yam reaffirmed his willingness to continue collaborating jointly with all ejidatarios, remembering that the doors of the administration will always be open to receive their concerns and proposals.

“I remind you that we will continue working together through the various projects, always with the friendly hand of the state governor, Ms. Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The land in dispute was in litigation over ownership after the military began to build on it last year. The six-hectares, which the ejidos claimed was theirs, actually belongs to the government.

Last year, the government started to build a new military barracks meant to house 200 personnel. In December, ownership paperwork was presented by rejected by the ejidos who protested by blocking the construction of a new municipal beach road in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
