Islanders of Holbox now charged monthly garbage removal fee

Holbox, Q.R. — Islanders of Holbox will now have to pay for their garbage to be removed after an announcement from city hall.

Mayor Josué Nivardo Mena Villanueva says that to have garbage collected, each home will have to pay 200 peso per month while hotels will be charged 300. Restaurants will be charged 2.2 peso per kilo of waste thrown out, money which will pay for the operation of private company, Eco-V.

After a meeting, Mena Villanueva said that the collection of fees will mark the start of operations of Eco-V, which will be responsible for the sanitation and garbage collection on the island.

He said that the situation is a challenge for city council and the company, but it must be done to avoid damaging the tourist image as well as avoiding a health problem.

The move comes after the collapse of the garbage site on the island, which he says, is a serious health issue.

Roberto Reynoso Sepúlveda of Eco-V says that garbage collection will be from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. so as not to affect the normal activities of the island.
