Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A German tourist at a Riviera Maya hotel died by apparent drowning Thursday. Hotel staff saw the 77-year-old man struggling while swimming. He was pulled from the water and emergency services called who rushed him to hospital.
The man was transferred by ambulance to hospital shortly before 2:00 p.m. but died. It is not clear if he was pronounced dead on arrival or if he died in hospital. He is believed to have suffered a heart attack while swimming.
Local authorities continue to investigate while an autopsy determines the man’s official cause of death.
