Forest firefighters continue 2,250 hectare battle in northwest of state

Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — Forest firefighters continue to battle a stubborn fire in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas in the northwest of the state.

The Government of Quintana Roo says fire fighters continue to work to fight the San José forest fire located in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas. The group of fighters have support of an MI-17 helicopter from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional for the transfer of personnel as well as for water discharges.

For days, firefighter have been working hard, building fire breaks to contain the spread of fire. On May 6, they were able to report a 75% control in the fire with 55 percent liquidation.

In a statement the state government said “control has been possible thanks to the strategies and tactics implemented by the Quintana Roo State Incident Management Team, which has been operating since May 3, 2023, which is a team made up of technical specialists from the federal, state and municipal governments.”

Brigades battling the San José forest fire report that the work being carried out is effective. To date, the fire has consumed approximately 2,550 hectares.
