Leona Vicario, Q.R. — The discovery of the remains of a man found dismembered in the town of Leona Vicario has been confirmed by local authorities. In a press release, the Attorney General of the State (FGE) reported the beginning of an investigation into the grisly finding Thursday.
While details of the scene have not been provided, local state officials have said that investigators continue at a green area along the Mérida-Cancun highway in the municipality of Puerto Morelos, where human remains were found inside black bags.
The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) says that the body is that of a male, but has not been identified. “Investigative police are carrying out the pertinent investigations that allow the victim to be identified and the case clarified,” they added, after local media speculated that the deceased was that of a Cancun traffic officer.
FGE officials said that the remains were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) where they are expected to be identified by a relative.
