Cozumel car seized and driver arrested after feds find 37 kilos of white snail

Cozumel, Q.R. — Island of Cozumel authorities towed a car and seized its contents after finding illegally caught white snail. Cozumel police stopped the car for an inspection after being tipped off by an anonymous report.

In the trunk they found 37 kilos of bagged snail.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) said that personnel from the Fifteenth Naval Zone seized a private vehicle and white snail in the vicinity of Chen Rio Saturday.

“The action was carried out after receiving an anonymous report indicating that a person aboard a private vehicle was carrying a white snail, in the vicinity of Playa Chen Río in Cozumel.

“Derived from the above, naval personnel in coordination with the Directorate of Public Security and Municipal Transit of Cozumel, located a vehicle driven by a male person with the characteristics provided in the report.

“Personnel proceeded to carry out an inspection of said vehicle, finding in the trunk a mosquito net bag containing approximately 37.2 kilograms of fresh white snail pulp, of which he could not verify its legal origin.

“Therefore, the precautionary detention of the vehicle was carried out, as well as the fishery product, for violating fishing legislation. The product was made available to the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission for the corresponding legal actions.”
