Bodies of six believed shot in Costa Maya found on Yucatan ranch

Xcalak, Q.R. — Authorities in Costa Maya are continuing their investigation into the disappearance of at least seven people during the past week. In a 48-hour-period, area families in the southern region of the state reported the disappearance of seven men.

The men were reported missing from the area of Xcalak. On Sunday, the State Attorney General (FGE) of Quintana Roo reported the discovery of six bodies on a ranch in Chikindzonot, Yucatan.

In a news brief, the Quintana Roo agency said DNA testing is being done to identify those found and confirm if they correspond to those reported as missing from the Xcalak area.

“It is reported that, in collaboration with the FGE of Yucatan, expert tests are being carried out to determine if the discovery of 6 lifeless bodies in Chinkindzonot, Yuc. correspond or not to the people reported as disappeared in Xcalak,” the FGE of Quintana Roo said.

The bodies of the six were located Saturday on a Yucatan ranch that borders the state of Quintana Roo. Elements from the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of National Defense were at the scene of the Yucatan finding aiding in the investigation. Reports say the men were killed on Xcalak properties then driven to the Yucatan ranch for disposal.

Between June 22 and 23, seven people were reported missing from the Costa Maya area by their families. The missing range in age from 19 to 46 and are reported to all be men who built palapas and looked after properties.

On June 24, an investigation for the disappearance of three men on June 22 began. However, the following day, another four men were reported missing from an Xcalak property.

Local authorities have not made any comment on the finding, however, Yucatan authorities have reported that three of the bodies found have been identified. They have not released the identity of the men.

The bodies of those found were all shot to death. Local authorities have not provided any possible motive for the killings. Xcalak families continue to wait for confirmation on the identity of the men found on the Yucatan ranch.
