Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A young visitor from the state of Campeche lost his life falling into a lagoon during a selfie. Emergency rescue units were sent in response to a 9-1-1 call of a possible drowning Sunday.
A specialized water rescue team was sent to the Zijil Noh-Ha lagoon, an area located about six kilometers west of the Carrillo Puerto-Limones highway. There, searchers were able to recover the 20-year-old man’s body.
According to available information, the accident happened when two men rented a kayak to tour the lagoon. During their tour, one of them stood up in the boat to take a selfie.
The plastic kayak tipped, throwing the young man into the water. According to his friend, he did not know how to swim. The second man in the boat tried to rescue his friend from the water but was unable.
Emergency services located the youth’s body at the bottom of the lagoon Sunday afternoon. Both men were Maya Train construction workers from Campeche. According to reports, neither of the kayakers were wearing a lifejacket.
