Xcaret confirms Riviera Maya construction site fire due to underground explosion

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The company where an on-site construction fire occurred has issued a statement. On Saturday afternoon, Xcaret confirmed a morning fire inside a tunnel near a hotel construction site on their property. The fire was the result of a large underground explosion.

While no one was injured, police, firemen and other emergency personnel were at the site. Emergency services arrived in response to reports of an underground explosion reported, at the time, to have been an electric transformer.

In a statement, Grupo Xcaret said “during the morning of February 1 of this year, a fire broke out in tunnel 4 located in the construction area adjacent to the hotels.

“The protocols established for this type of incident were immediately applied, so it was immediately contained by our brigades with the invaluable support of the fire department and civil protection personnel of the Municipality of Solidaridad.

“No one was injured, and only some material losses were caused. At this time, the corresponding investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of this event with the support of the competent authorities of firefighters, civil protection, national guard and the prosecutor’s office of the municipality of Solidaridad, whom we thank for their immediate reaction.

“Together we will determine the pertinent actions that prioritize compliance with our main value, which is Safety First. We appreciate the interest you always have in Grupo Xcaret.”

On Saturday morning, emergency services were at the scene in what was reported to be an explosion in a high voltage electricity register. Area workers were evacuated. Authorities continue to investigate an official cause of the explosion and subsequent fire.
