Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Approximately 19 million peso is being invested into the remodeling of the central Puerto Morelos park. The previous park infrastructure was torn down over the weekend, sparking a small protest among residents.
The remodeling of the town’s Plaza Cívica (Parque del Caco Antiguo) will see the plaza and pedestrian walk in the Old Town of Puerto Morelos remodeled in two stages. The first stage will consist of laying underground wiring, while the second stage will consist of the creation of recreation places.
In a statement, Puerto Morelos mayor Laura Fernández Piña said the remodeling of the main park of the Old Town is a project that will bring great benefit for Puerto Morelos in tourism and economic matters after decades of neglect when still it belonged to the municipality of Benito Juárez.
The Hoteliers Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres noted that “the renewal of the urban image of Puerto Morelos will maintain the essence of a charming town that provides its visitors with a suitable space to enjoy artistic cultural activities, as well as the exhibition and sale of local crafts.”
According to Miguel Ángel Zetina, general secretary of the Puerto Morelos City Council, the work is expected to be complete in about 2.5 months.
