Trade between Mexico and the US grew in 2019

Mexico City, Mexico — A report by the US Department of Commerce indicates that during the past year, trade between the United States and Mexico grew 0.5 percent compared to 2018.

The commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States in 2019 totaled $614.5 billion USD, a record figure between both countries.

Héctor Magaña, an analyst at the Center for Research in Economics and Business of Tecnológico de Monterrey, said that the greater demand for Mexican products was due to the reduction of trade between the United States and China, which registered a decrease of 17.6 percent due to the tariff war.

Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis at Banco Base, said the loss that China experienced in the US market was offset by an increase in exports from Mexico to the US, which increased 3.5 percent and allowed it to establish itself as its main trading partner followed by Canada, leaving the Asian giant in third place.
