Tourist dies running out of air diving in Riviera Maya waters

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A man reported diving in Riviera Maya died by drowning Sunday afternoon. According to early information, the 42 year old Venezuelan tourist was part of a group expedition.

He was diving in Riviera Maya waters near a theme park when he is reported to have run out of oxygen. The group were at a depth of approximately 18 meters at the time of the incident.

The captain of boat Nicolás alerted authorities around 1:30 p.m. of a missing group diver. According to reports, authorities were not permitted access to the theme park to respond to the accident.

A team of divers began their sea search at a different point from land. The man’s body was located at around 5:30 p.m. and returned to waiting officials near 16th Street in Playa del Carmen.

The body was brought to land in Playa del Carmen around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Personnel from the State Attorney General (FGE) were at the scene of the recovery to remove the body. Local authorities have not made any public comment regarding the drowning or recovery attempt.
