Sustainable Tourism looking to expand Puerto Morelos Ruta de los Centoes highway into four lanes

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A study is being carried out on the two lane Cenote de los Rutas highway of Puerto Morelos. Authorities say they are hoping to expand the road system from two lanes to four. Their expansion project will also include a bike path to attract more sporting events.

Raúl Guadarrama García, the Secretary for Sustainable Tourism of Puerto Morelos says they are working with the state on a study of the area. He says the City Council is working on an ambitious project to expand approximately 35 kilometers of road that connects Puerto Morelos with Leona Vicario. The expansion will see it turned into a four-lane highway with the addition of a bicycle path.

Guadarrama García explained that the project also includes strengthening the tourist infrastructure and attracting more sporting events.

“We are waiting for the approval of the cycle path which would be fantastic to attract more sports tourism to the area,” he said.

Funding for the project will come from municipal, state and federal pockets. “It will be necessary to bring together all the parties involved and make arrangements to secure the resources that will allow this project to be carried out,” said Guadarrama Gracia.

The municipal official said they are in the process of regularization the centoes to comply with safety and operation regulations. The investment in infrastructure seeks not only to improve access to these sites, but also to guarantee the safety of visitors.

In addition, the local government hopes that the expansion of the road and the bicycle path will promote the development of the region and the arrival of more tourists, positioning the Ruta de los Cenotes as a key destination in the Riviera Maya.
