Suspect charged attempting to extort under-construction Riviera Maya hotel 50,000 a week

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Authorities say a man has been formally charged after attempting to extort a Riviera Maya hotel. The man, identified as Jesús Salvador “N”, is alleged to have demanded 50,000 a week from the under-construction hotel for floor rights.

“The suspect is identified as Jesús Salvador “N”, who on May 14, 2021, went to a construction site for a hotel located in the Riviera Maya area where he told the manager that he was there on behalf of his boss.

“His boss demanded the amount of 50,000 pesos per week for the so-called “floor rights” under the threat that if they did not comply, they would cause problems on site,” police said.

Police say Jesús Salvador “N” used to work at the construction site, but resigned to later show up and extort the company.

“This person was a worker at the project, but after resigning, he showed up at the site to extort the manager,” they said.

The construction site manager filed a complaint. A judge issued an arrest warrant for Jesús Salvador “N” who was taken into custsody on April 20.

“Following the victim’s complaint, the FGE requested and obtained the corresponding arrest warrant from a judge. This warrant was executed on April 20 of this year by members of the Investigative Police, attached to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Extortion and Kidnapping,” they said.

A judge has ordered Jesús Salvador “N” to remain in preventive detention for the duration of the judicial proceedings.
