Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A two vehicle crash left significant damage Sunday night on the federal highway in Riviera Maya. The collision happened when a Playa del Carmen taxi allegedly crashed into an ambulance.

The parked ambulance was responding to a highway accident near Puerto Aventuras when it was hit from behind by the taxi. The responding paramedics from the ambulance were not injured in the accident, however, they were forced to call in a second ambulance so they could continue treating the first highway accident victims.
According to available information, the driver of the taxi was speeding down the highway when he failed to realize the ambulance was stopped. The PDC cab driver ended up rear-ending the ambulance, causing significant damage to both units.
National Guard Highways were on scene directing nighttime traffic around the already congested area due to the first highway accident. Tow trucks were called in to remove several vehicles from the road.
