José María Morelos, Q.R. — Six Mayan homes in the community of Huay Max were destroyed by a large fire Tuesday. Despite the efforts of residents to contain the fire, high temperatures and strong winds made it impossible.

Firemen from the town of José María Morelos, more than 50 kilometers away, arrived at the scene in response to the 1:00 p.m. call. By the time they arrived, six homes had been eaten by the raging fire that was fanned by strong winds.

While no injuries were reported, six Mayan homes made of wood and palapa roofs in the Huay Max community of José María Morelos were destroyed. Firemen have not commented on a cause of the initial fire.
